Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.
First of all, I would like to thank the Beijing Film Festival committee for inviting me to serve as the Jury President and to meet my six distinguished and talented judges here.
In the last few days, I was often asked one question - what is the standard that the jury holds? How will we judge the work of original creation and deem it as superb? Well, different strokes for different folks. From my experience, good films, regardless of their subjects and lengths, have one thing in common - the devotion and persistence of the filmmakers.
A couple of days ago, I went to a restaurant for breakfast. As finishing my soya milk, I noticed a sentence engraved at the bottom of the bowl - "For you, the finest grinding is worth a lifetime". Of course, making films and grinding beans are not the same thing. And no investors would bear a "lifetime" with you for a film. But this spirit is the essence of a good filmmaking. http://www.kouyi.org
The Japanese filmmaker Ozu Yasujiro once said, "I open a tofu shop, and I only make tofu." I believe only with this dedication, can the filmmaker become a qualified craftsman, and the film an excellent work. This should be the standard of the jury.
The Beijing International Film Festival is eight years old now, full of youthful and fresh spirit. As a participant of this festival, I'm privileged to witness its growth and I'm sure it will thrive in the future.
Thank you all and wish the festival a complete success!
