RCEP, the world's biggest free trade agreement, was initiated by ASEAN countries back in 2011.

The agreement would link the ten ASEAN members and their five free trade agreement partners: China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

It encompasses 2.2 billion people and accounts for around 30 percent of the global GDP. It will cut as much as 90 percent of the tariffs on imports.

Three of the five free trade agreement partners China, Japan and South Korea had been stepping up cooperation with ASEAN. At the 21st ASEAN plus three foreign ministers’ meeting held in September, the ministers committed to enhancing cooperation in regional economic stability, as well as joint efforts in combating the pandemic.
