Welcome to the “Tiangong Dialogue” series of activities jointly organized by the Chinese Embassy in Somalia and the Somali Ministry of Education. This morning, we will show the Chinese space science fiction movie “the Wandering Earth”. We would like to thank the Somali Ministry of Information for its strong support for this movie show.
“The Wandering Earth” is adapted from the science fiction of the same name by Chinese writer Mr. Liu Cixin, 2015 Hugo Award Winner for his novel The Three-Body Problem. The background of the story is that in 2075, the sun is about to die. The earth and even the whole solar system are in danger of being swallowed up by the sun. In order to escape from the solar system and preserve our civilization, human beings put aside all existing disputes and differences, formed a coalition government, and built tens of thousands of huge engines with global efforts to push the earth away from the sun and fly to a safer new position. In order to arrive at a new star system 2500 years later, mankind has constantly overcome difficulties in the long journey in the universe, taking the earth to wander far away from the dying sun.
Elon Musk, founder of Space-X, an American space exploration technology company, and Tesla electric vehicle company, also said that the sun will engulf the whole earth after it decays, and humans must leave the earth to migrate to other planets before that.
However, in “the Wandering Earth”, there’s another option, that is, human beings take the earth with them to move away. As a science fiction film, “the Wandering Earth” shows the Chinese imagination of space life and travel, and also reflects the origin of the Chinese civilization, agriculture, showing strong and close attachment of the Chinese to their homes and land. That’s why in “the Wandering Earth”, there is no “Noah’s Ark” style of uprooting and escape from the land, but the decision to “wander with the earth”. There is no omnipotent maverick hero to save us, but only “saturated rescue” of all people united in one purpose, one after another. Infighting and ideological disputes give way to understanding and cooperation based on a community with a shared future for mankind. “The Wandering Earth” opens a good window on the philosophy and culture of the Chinese.
In many civilizations around the world, there are records of “the Deluge(great floods)”. Only in China’s records, people did not choose to flee their homes, but took the initiative to control water. The attachment to home is a culture encoded in the genes of every Chinese. In the face of global challenges, China’s choice is always to be united, not to abandon, not to give up, and never to leave anyone behind. This is also reflected in China’s practical actions. We strongly support the global fight against the Covid-19 pandemic and have provided nearly 200 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines to Africa. We actively help international efforts in response to the food and energy crisis. We help Africa to build and keep peace. And we call on all countries to jointly tackle climate change.
China and Somalia have a long history of friendship. 600 years ago, Zheng He, a Chinese navigator and Muslim, arrived in Mogadishu, leaving behind a beautiful story of friendly exchanges between the Chinese and Somali people. This afternoon, we will witness and join the dialogue between Chinese taikonauts and Somali and African youth, and write a new page in the history of friendly exchanges between our two nations. I wish the dialogue a full success.
