Established in 1989, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) aims to promote free trade and economic cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region.

APEC has 21 member economies: Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, China's Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Republic of Korea, Thailand, the United States and Vietnam.
APEC has three official observers: the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Secretariat, the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.

APEC economies are home to an estimated 2.9 billion people, accounting for 39 percent of the global population in 2016. Every year one of the 21 member economies hosts APEC meetings and serves as the chair.
Growth has soared in the region since the first APEC meeting, with real GDP increasing from 19 trillion US dollars in 1989 to 45 trillion US dollars in 2016, accounting for 60 percent of the global GDP.
The region also accounted for 47 percent of global trade in goods and services with a value of 20 trillion US dollars in 2016. In 2019, APEC GDP is forecast to expand 3.7 percent.
