Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the Chinese government has given top priority to the safety and health of its people, taken the strictest pandemic prevention and control measures and achieved major strategic outcomes. By far, no cluster of cases has emerged in school, online education covered nearly 300 million learners and realized the aims of “disrupted class, undisrupted learning” during the pandemic. All the education institutions in China have reopened since autumn semester. Meanwhile, we have shared our experiences and online resources to support other countries’ fight against the pandemic within our capability.
当前疫情仍在肆虐,挑战仍然严峻。我们应当采取措施,共抗疫情,共促教育发展。
As the pandemic is still raging around the world and challenge still persists, we should continue our concerted efforts to fight against the pandemic and advance education development.
First, take strict prevention and control measures to ensure the safety of all education institutions. Adhering to “safety and health first”, we shall coordinate pandemic prevention and school reopening, stay on high alert and take scientific, thorough and targeted measures to prevent large-scale outbreaks on campus.
Second, prioritize financing to ensure no child is left behind. Taking education as basic livelihood and fundamental human right, we shall prioritize education budgets as well as poverty-stricken areas and disadvantaged groups so that no child will be deprived of access to education and development opportunities for a better future as a result of the pandemic.
Third, deepen reform to advance the quality revolution in education. We shall capitalize on the experiences of large-scale online education, coordinate and promote the application of new technology and education reform and accelerate the development of high quality education enjoyed by everyone, anytime and anywhere.
Finally, scale up cooperation to advance the building of a global education community. We shall strengthen international cooperation to share quality online education resources and build a global education community. We shall also strengthen education for international understanding, oppose racial discrimination and all kinds of extremism and join hands to resolve challenges of COVID-19.
As pointed out by Chinese president Xi Jinping, global threats and global challenges require strong, global responses. Mankind belongs to one community of shared future with intertwined interests. China will firmly support UNESCO to play its lead role, continue to implement collaborative programs, share experiences in combating COVID-19 as well as its online education resources and support developing countries, in particular African countries. China is determined to work with UNESCO member states, hand in hand, for a better future.
