Kite, called Zhiyuan or Yaozi in ancient China, was invented by the Chinese people. During the Five Dynasty Period, Li Ye invented a paper kite like an eagle and flew it in the sky. Later people fixed some strings on kites. When high in the air, they vibrated and sounded like a guzheng, a Chinese zither. Thus people named it as Fengzheng.
To make a kite, one needs to make a frame first, then cover it with paper or thin tough silk, and paint it with pictures. There are various designs of Chinese kites, including birds, beasts, insects and fishes. The popular ones are swallow, butterfly and eagle. The centipede-or-dragon shaped kite with many sections can dance about like a huge dragon in the air.
中国人不仅把风筝当作有趣的游戏,和有益于身体健康的体育活动,也常常把精美的风筝挂在墙壁上欣赏。
The Chinese regard kite as a game as well as a sport. People also hang kites on the wall for decoration.
