Seventy-one times before, our National Health Service has marked the anniversary of its founding but never in circumstances quite like this. Because this year, we’ve seen not only the greatest challenge the NHS has ever faced, but also an unprecedented outpouring of affection and support for that institution. Week after week, millions, tens of millions of people have taken to their doorsteps, lined the streets, lent precariously out of rainbow-bedecked windows to clap their hands, band their saucepans and show their appreciation for the NHS.

我们的国家医疗服务体系（NHS）此前经历了71次纪念日，但从未遇到过今天这样的情况。因为今年，我们不仅看到了NHS面对的最大挑战，更看到了人们对它前所未有的热情和支持。一周又一周，成千上万的人走到他们的家门前，在街道两旁，从彩虹顶的窗户外面，拍手喝彩，敲打锅碗瓢盆，表达对NHS的感谢。

And that’s because those three letters don’t just stand for National Health Service, they stand for an idea; for a set of values at the heart of our national identity; for the belief, still held almost universally after nearly three quarters of a century: that the health service of this country should be available to all; that everyone should contribute to the cost and that no one should be denied the treatment or attention they require because they can’t afford it. That is what those three letters stand for.

那是因为这三个字母不仅代表国家医疗服务体系，还代表一个观念，它是我们民族认同中的一套价值观，在将近四分之三个世纪之后，这种观念仍然普遍存在，那就是：我们国家的医疗服务应向所有人提供；每个人都应该能够负担起这笔费用，任何人都不会因为无法负担医疗费用而被拒绝治疗和关注。这才是这三个字母代表的意思。

And behind them stand the very special men and women who make it all happen – doctors, nurses, midwives, paramedics, pharmacists, porters, cleaners, radiographers, administrators, and many, many more. Amazing people in an amazing organisation and one that fills me with pride.

而在这三个字母后面站着的是我们特殊的男人和女人，是他们使这一切得以实现——我们的医生，护士，助产士，护理人员，药剂师，搬运工，清洁工，放射医师，行政人员等等。他们是这一出色组织中的杰出人士，他们令我自豪。

As Prime Minister, I’m proud to have given the NHS a £34 billion funding increase, its biggest in decades, and made sure it has every penny it needs to cope with coronavirus. And as a citizen of this country, I’m immensely proud that the infant conceived, gestated and delivered by Beveridge, Bevan, Willink, Godber, and so many others, has grown into the venerable, sprightly 72-year-old we see today.
