There's little room for error and public transportation schedules in the run up to the Chinese New Year, which falls on January 25. Family reunions are sacred and to be unable to make it home is unthinkable. This massive migration begins on the 10th of January and is expected to last for the next 40 days.
Chinese authorities expect nearly 3 billion trips to be made, of these 440 million trips will use China's high speed railways, that's over 5,000 two-way train services each day. To relieve congestion, more than 1,000 stations in the country will use the e-ticket system. Passengers can board trains faster using a valid ID card or a QR code.
Meanwhile, China's civil aviation authorities say they are setting in place protocols in case of extreme weather and emergency plans to mitigate any impact of large scale flight delays. Air travel during this Chinese Lunar New Year is expected to hit a record high of 8 percent to 79 million flights.
